The Depiction Of The Javanese Royal Family Way Of Life In The Past
Taman Sari Water Castle is an old abandoned building located at the south-west of Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat (Sultanate Palace). It was dedicated for leisure activities for the Sultan and his family. Was famous with the name “The Fragance Garden” as it has a lot of plantations like fuits and flowers in the past. Unfortunately, those garden now is removed and used as people house. This building was used only by the first ruler of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I.
The idea of this building is to maintain balance between work and rest. Since time to time, Javanese people believes that leisure activities will help our mind by lowering its temperature and refresh it. Sometimes, leisure activities are able to make inspirations come to our mind and making us ready to work again. This place has three main pools for the Sultan Family including his concubines and an undergound mosque for them to pray nearby.
It was built by Tumenggun Prawirosentiko, The Regent of Madiun as a compensation for him and his people for not being able to pay the tax. Altough later on, it was continued by Prince Notokusumo I, who later become KGPA Paku Alam I.
